Banana Split… In A Glass… For Breakfast

I'll split it with you...
It wasn't until taking the last few sips of my breakfast smoothie the other day that I realized just how much it reminded me of a banana split. Up until that point I just kept thinking, "This tastes gooooood! Maybe too good for something that's supposed to be breakfast?… Nah!"

Just like a real banana split it's got dairy, bananas, strawberries, vanilla, and chocolate (yum!). The only things missing are the whipped cream, sprinkles, and a cherry on top. Oh yeah... and the "I-can't-believe-I-ate-all-that" guilt. There's not a lick of that.

Unlike a bona fide banana split, this is packed with pro-biotics, leafy greens, and wheat germ. But you'd sure never know it from the taste....

Banana Split Smoothie
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water kefir (or water, or more milk)
2 ripe bananas
12 frozen strawberries
1 big handful of chard and beet greens
1 heaping Tbsp wheat germ
1 heaping Tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
3-4 ice cubes
1 heaping Tbsp strawberry jam

Blend into oblivion. Taste. Adjust for flavor. Pour into glasses and enjoy!
Makes 2 large smoothies or 3-4 smaller ones.

Smoothie Tips
If you ever get carried away and find yourself with too much smoothie, here are a couple of ways to make use of all that healthy goodness...
  • Freeze leftover smoothie in popsicle molds for a healthy snack on a hot day.
  • Pour any leftover smoothie in ice cube trays (or muffin tins, or small tupperware, or small plastic cups), and freeze them. Once frozen, un-mold and store in a freezer bag. Then toss a couple in your next sensational smoothie.
